Kingfisher Regional Hospital and Pioneer Telephone Cooperative Hosts Blood Drive April 22
All healthy Kingfisher-area residents are encouraged to donate blood with Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) in a blood drive sponsored by Kingfisher Regional Hospital and Pioneer Telephone Cooperative. The drive will be held 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., April 22, at Pioneer Telephone Engineering Building, 315 E Robberts. All healthy adults, 17 and older can donate blood every 56 days.
“We appreciate Kingfisher Regional Hospital and Pioneer Telephone Cooperative for hosting this blood drive,” said John Armitage, M.D., Oklahoma Blood Institute president and chief executive. “By taking one hour out of the day, Kingfisher blood donors have helped to ensure our family members, friends and neighbors have the life-saving blood they need.”
Donors will receive a free tote bag, along with free health screenings and Members for Life Points to use in OBI’s online store.
Since there’s no substitute for blood, the supply must constantly be renewed.
Although all blood types are needed, those with O Negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate. According to the American Association of Blood Banks, those with O Negative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population. However, O Negative blood can be used by anyone in emergency need when a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified.
Oklahoma Blood Institute is the eleventh largest, non-profit blood center in America. In 2009, more than 198,000 donations provided blood for patients in more than 150 medical facilities in Oklahoma and North Central Texas. OBI employs nearly 700 Oklahomans and works with an estimated 800 volunteers and 2,600 drive coordinators.
